Weekend Update :: Sunny with a Side of Freezing

Last week Tahoe South hosted a meteorologist conference complete with speakers discussing global warming, climate change and avalanches. I wont bore you with too many details, but it was a extremely educational and tiring week.

Here’s a behind the scenes peek of our keynote speaker, Chris Field, being interviewed by media.

The busy work week ended with no power at the office resulting in a half day. I rounded out the evening at Riva Grill with these lovely ladies.

Every Friday (December-April) Riva Grill hosts Fish Taco Friday full of taco and drink specials, music, raffle prizes and good times with friends.

Specials include fried or grilled fish tacos, signature Wet Woody (rum drink) or Corona.

By the title you know where I’m going with this. Well let me just show you how cold it was not only Saturday but Sunday morning! brrrr….

Of course Saturday and Sunday I braved the temps and went snowboarding. Both days I ran into a few friends at Heavenly. I couldn’t not post a photo of the view Yes, it was sunny and cold!

We couldn’t leave without taking a Epic Mix Photo. Our photographer suggested the pose and well we went with it.

Oh there was football and Golden Globes too!

The countdown to our honeymoon has begun! The Mr. and I are off to sunny Playa Del Carmen Mexico next week. Don’t worry Roxy will be in good hands, we have a friend house/dog sitting. Next week on the blog there will be a few guest posts from some lovely bloggers, so stay tune.

Epic Wrap Up

All good things must come to an end. Let’s count up the days! New for the 2010/11 ski season Vail announced it’s launch of EpicMix. So ,what is Epic Mix?

Per the FAQ found here… EpicMix is new for the 2010/2011 season at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly, and a revolutionary technological advancement for the ski industry. With EpicMix, all your activity on the slopes is automatically captured and uploaded to your EpicMix dashboard.

Now you can follow your days skied, track your vertical feet, see where you rode, earn EpicMix pins for your achievements, and collect points.

But that’s not all. You can also connect with your social networks like Facebook and Twitter and share your stats, pins and points.

All this is possible because of Radio Frequency scanners at the base of every lift, and RF technology built into every Vail Resorts season pass, and PEAKS card.

Basically, it’s a social media platform used to elevate your mountain experience by allowing you to track your days & vertical feet all while earning pins and bragging to friends and family via Facebook and Twitter. For more details check out the website here.

I’ve been tracking my days and vertical all season and although I feel I could ~~more like should~~ have snowboarded a lot more it’s a fun way to keep track. It’s crazy to think the year with the most snowfall, since living in SLT, was the year I went up the least. Maybe it was all the powder days wearing me down or wind hold days keeping me from going up. Either way I know I’ll be snowboarding a lot more next year. Plus, I have EpicMix to hold me to it.

Worthy Side Note: Mountains outside of the Vail family weren’t counted and out-of-bounds areas accessed by a gate were not counted in my vertical..

Every year our department holds a group handling clinic. We couldn’t have scheduled it on a better day this year! Great snow and sunny skies equal an epic day!

Reno Aces

Sometimes life passes by and you forget to blog about cool events in your life…or sometimes you’re just not feeling it. Over the past few months I’ve tried to be a better blogger and with that here’s me catching up on my Summer blogging

Back in the beginning of August I attended my first Heavenly Media Baseball event, a Reno Aces game. The SF Giants game was actually the second event. If you were in Tahoe August 8th you remember the crazy hail storm, rain, wind and whatever else the gods had in store that day -bottom line it was insane. Well Aimi X. and I were in Reno while all this was taking place on the Mountain. In Reno we had the sky open up and pour buckets, lighting only a few miles away, and flash flood warnings. The game was obviously delayed. Just when we thought they were going to cancel the game the rain stopped just long enough to actually play 9 innings! Don’t asked who they played as I don’t remember, but we had a great time and ate tons of brownies, peanuts and popcorn.

Powder Day…

At Heavenly…..

Today marked my first real powder day of the season. Although, we’ve had numerous powder days and even a powder week today was my first real powder day. We all knew it was coming, but you just don’t know how much snow is really going to fall until it comes. RSN said 10″ and I was out the door heading to Heavenly ready to score me some freshies!

Any powder day makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. It’s days like today that remind me why I moved to Tahoe and why I continue to stay. With around 3 months left in the season I plan to lock in a few more powder days!
