The First Year: Cherish all the Little Things

We’re quickly approaching two! I know I can’t believe it either. Where has the time gone? With Emerson’s birthday barely two months away it has me thinking about our first year at home, among other things.

I was lucky enough to spent 3[ish] months at home with Emerson before returning to work. Then I was fortunate enough to work from home a few days a week before deciding to become a independent contractor 100% of the time. But enough about me — let’s talk about my sweet baby girl.

As first time parents we learned something new everyday! Just when you thought you had a handle on something things changed. The key to surviving the first year is learning to roll with the changes and cherish all the little things.

This is one of my favorite photos from her first birthday. It’s a little crazy how things have changed in nearly a year. As we’re approaching two her personality is quickly developing and it’s full of sassy. She’s become miss independent and we try to let her ‘try’ to do things on her own. I mean girlfriend walked at 10 months so it doesn’t com to a big surprise.

Emerson Quinn // One Month

Girlfriend is one month and I can’t believe it.

Weight + Height | She’s growing like a weed! We had our one month check up today and she was 8 lbs 10 oz and 20.5 inches!

Health | She has a clean bill of health, but some how has hiccups after every feeding. Oh and girlfriend has gas. According to her pediatrician it’s because of my high fiber diet. I guess I need to cut back on kale salads and spinach smoothies.

Sleep | At this point we get at least one four hour stretch at night then she’s up two to three hours later. We officially started baby wise this week. It’s been interesting.

Eat | All breast milk. However, as of today we’re starting to supplement with formula since I can’t keep up with her demand and we’re out of our frozen supply from when she was in the NICU. We’ll see how that goes.

Wear | She’s wearing 0-3 month now. I couldn’t believe that in just days she out grew her newborn clothes.

Social | My mother-in-law (aka Nana) was in town all last week. It was really great having her here. My sister and brother get into town tonight.

Baby Gear | The Summer Infant SwaddleMe Adjustable Infant Wrap is a lifesaver! Emerson sleeps in one every night. We’re also loving Satsuma Designs Baby Mittens they don’t fall off — ever.

Milestones | Tuesday was our first entire day all by ourselves! We went and had lunch with our friends at the Blue Angel Cafe.

We’re making progress with tummy time. Emerson is doing great turning her head from side to side. She even rolled over twice.

Postpartum | This mama is feeling great! I had my three week check up last week and to my surprise already hit my pre pregnancy weight! I’m still soft and am hoping at my appointment next week I’m cleared for full activity. Until then I’m still logging miles daily walking.

Emerson Quinn // Two Weeks

Happy Friday!

So I had every intention on posting Emerson’s birth story and nursery reveal this week, but I was busy getting my snuggles in and before I knew it she turned two weeks! Moving forward I plan on posting monthly updates, but I felt I needed to celebrate her first week at home. It was a successful week at that.

This was the best photo. She kept rolling on me. HA!

Weight

At our one week check up she was back at her birth weight, a even 7 lbs and measured 19.5 inches.

Health

She’s doing great! The pediatrician was pleased with the cooling out come and we are too! Now that we are home so far so good. She’s a pooping and peeing machine.

Sleep

Girlfriend likes to sleep and we’re lucky she sleeps through the night. Hoping I didn’t just jinx myself.

Eat

All breast milk. We actually do a combo of breast feeding and bottle feeding. While we were at UC Davis Children’s Hospital we were only able to bottle feed so I got really good at pumping. Once we brought our girl home we started on breast feeding and have been successful. However, I ‘m starting to feel as though I’m not producing enough.

Wear

Nothing but newborn clothes. 0-3 months are still too big.

Social

We had a number of visitors this week. It felt great to see friends. She even had her first date with her future bf Wyatt.

Baby Gear

Other than the boppy pillow for nursing we’re loving the Summer Infant SwaddleMe Microfleece Wrap, Boba Wrap and Rock n’ Play.

Milestones

Passing all her tests and being discharged from the hospital.

Postpartum

Things seem to be healing well. I have a check up next week so we’ll see. Fingers crossed I’ll be cleared to start working out. Not sure what I weigh, but I think it’s safe to say I only need to shed five or so pounds and tighten up a bit.

It’s still very surreal that we’re now responsible for a little person. We’re just smitten. The weather has been gorgeous and we’ve been able to get outside for a few long walks. It feels great to get out and move.

Welcoming Emerson Quinn

We welcomed our beautiful little girl into the world at 12:39 a.m. on January 29, 2015. She weighed in at 7 lbs and measured 19 inches.

World say hello to Emerson Quinn.

She decided to make an appearance a day early and we’re over the moon. Delivery was long and gurgling and baby had to be transportated to UC Davis NICU, but so far all the results are positive. I’ll be sharing more in the coming weeks.

Bump Update // 39 weeks

How far along:

39 weeks today — final countdown! I’m saying February 3 as it’s a full moon.

Baby’s size:
She’s the size of a watermelon (it feels like it), weighing in at 6-9lbs. and measuring at 18-20 inches!

Weight gain:
As of this morning I’m only up 17-18 ish lbs. OMG — However, my belly grew so much over the last week! Maybe it’s all the Lara Bars/Aussie Bites I’ve been snacking on. I might make it without any love marks (aka stretch marks), but honestly I don’t know and it’s hard to tell. My mom has them so I feel like I’ll end up with them too. Either way I keep slathering on the Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter (at least twice a day).

Food cravings:
Last week was Mexican, but over all nothing really.

Sleep:
Sleeping the entire night is now over. I now wake up at least 3 times a night to use the bathroom, but luckily I can fall right back asleep. At least we know I’m well hydrated.

Movement:

TONS! She just doesn’t stop. I’m not kidding — even when I’m working out she’s moving and grooving.

Best moment this week:

Knowing that it’s only days until we meet her.

Miss anything?

Just feeling normal aka no belly!

Symptoms:

No contractions, but I do have what they call “lighting crotch.” Yup that’s a thing. All those sharp pains are from the baby sitting low in my pelvis and hitting nerve endings. Lovely.

Workouts:

Still
maintaining 5 slow workouts a week. After getting sick at 37 weeks and developing a slight cough I now have early signs of diastasis recti. Per my doctor’s advice and to help prevent any further damage, I’m now rocking a Bao Bei Maternity Belly Sports Bra. I wont really know how bad the separation is until after the baby is born, but I was told it didn’t look bad and should reattach with exercise. Did you know it happens to 1/3 of pregnant women?!

Maternity Clothes?

Yes, daily. Lots of leggings, sweaters and dresses. I pretty much wear the same thing every week.

Mood:

Happy and anxious. Looks like we’re going to have a house full once the baby is born loving on her, but not sure it’s the best thing for us or my sanity. I’m very type A. When were you willing to have company post baby?

Looking forward to:
Meeting our little girl, new adventures as a party of three, and getting my body back in shape after baby (yup I went there).

Bump Update // 37 Weeks

How far along:

37 weeks today — three weeks to go!

Baby’s size:
She’s the size of a winter melon and weighing in at 6lbs as of our Tuesday appointment!

Weight gain:
As of this morning I’m only up 15-16 lbs (67 kg) depending on the day. All belly and a little butt!

Food cravings:
Nothing really. I actually caught a bug so smoothies and soup are the only things that sound remotely good.

Sleep:
Last week was great. This week not so much. Monday night I think I woke up every hour on the hour. ugh. Being sick sucks. Typically I beat the annual office bug, but this year I wasn’t so lucky — even with a flu shot.

Gender:

TONS! She just doesn’t stop.

Best moment this week:

Knowing that it‘s only days or weeks until we meet her. Getting our maternity photos we ordered!

Miss anything?

Just feeling normal.

Symptoms:

Sicky face. Although it’s not pretty — I was able to mustard up the energy to shower and snap a photo this morning. It’s more frustrating than anything. I’ve had the best pregnancy until getting sick this week. With a cough I’m really worried about the extra strain on my abdomen wall. Other than that nothing else to report.

Workouts:

Still
maintaining 5 workouts a week on top of walking the dog. Had to miss a few this week. Trying to just get healthy.

Maternity Clothes?

Yes, for the most part. Lots of leggings and sweaters.

Mood:

Mostly happy — only cry this week was because I’m sick and couldn’t sleep.

Looking forward to:
Wrapping up the nursery and meeting our little girl.

Baby M’s nursery is starting to come together nicely! We’re still sticking to an eclectic modern style and the chevron rug works with our Pottery Barn bedding!

The latest great debate is glider, rocker, sitting chair or no chair at all. Personally I’m not a fan of the typical glider, so I’ve been on a mission to find a modern glider/rocker. The nine options above prove there are modern glider/rockers for every budget.

We’re leaning towards the Ikea Poang rocker, but have even discussed just purchasing a normal chair. Have you seen this Ikea rocker hack? It might be a great long term option if you’re looking for a chair that will work post baby.

Bump Update // 35 Weeks

How far along:

35 weeks today — five weeks to go! Whoa, I can’t believe it.

Baby’s size:
She’s the size of an coconut and measuring 4.25lbs as of last week! She might be a tad on the small side, but she’s getting bigger day by day! Since she’s about a week behind in growth we have an appointment for another measurement in two weeks to make sure she growing.

Weight gain:
As of Wednesday’s doctor’s appointment I’m still only up 15 lbs. I’m really happy about my progress. All belly!

Food cravings:
It’s not so much a craving, but more like it’s just the holidays. Let’s say I’ve been eating whatever I want for the last month. HA! Whole 30 starts January 5th!

Sleep:
Still sleeping great! I’m one lucky girl. At least a solid 8 hours a night. I actually switch from sleeping on my back to my left side throughout the night. No special pillow required just 1-2 regular pillows.

Gender:

Movement:

TONS! She really likes to kick me in the ribs. She also started doing rolls on me the other day while I was walking the dog! I have a feeling we are going to have a very active child.

Best moment this week:

Seeing her during our 35 week appointment. Another high note was learning that we’ll be able to deliver in Tahoe. Last week we visited the specialist in Reno, NV and they have no problem it. Worse case is we take a seven minute helicopter ride.

Also getting pedis with two of my other preggo friends and of course Christmas!

Miss anything?

Just feeling normal.

Symptoms:

Not much. A few sharp pains here and there and sore hips (probably from carrying around another 15 lbs).

Workouts:

Still
maintaining. I posted about my favorite pregnancy workout gear on Monday. It’s official — I’m taking a break from the box/crossfit until after the baby. I have to modify too much. Now, I actually make up my own WOD at the gym.

Maternity Clothes?
Yes, for the most part. My co-workers and husband are going to get tried of my attire really quick. I picked up this and this non-maternity top and love them. They will definitely will work over the next five weeks and beyond.

Mood:

Relieved about being able to have the baby in Tahoe and not needing to drive over an hour! Anxious about the baby room. I think my dog is picking up on it too. She tore open two Christmas gifts, two Christmas cards and a number paper items. This is not like her and trust me she is not being neglected.

Looking forward to:
Relaxing next month. Well, at least trying too.

Bump Update // 33 Weeks

How far along:

33 weeks today — Seven weeks to go!

Baby’s size:
She’s the size of an durian and measuring up to 18.7 inches and 5.8 lbs. She’s getting bigger day by day!

Weight gain:
I’m weighing in at a solid 147 lbs which means I’m only up 15 pounds — even after Thanksgiving!

Food cravings:
Eggs, toast and avocado! Not much different than before. I can’t pass up the office treats either. So good, but so bad!

Sleep:
Still sleeping great! I’m one lucky girl. At least a solid 8-9 hours a night. However, I had a few rough nights around the full moon.

Gender:

TONS! Movin and groovin!

Best moment this week:

My Tahoe baby shower and seeing my sweet college friend and her family! Plus, finally ordering our Christmas cards from Minted!

Miss anything?
Eh, it doesn’t really matter. I would say a glass of wine with dinner, but it’s been so long at this point.

Symptoms:

The occasional bit of heart burn. Nothing a few rice crackers and pellegrino can’t fix.

Workouts:

Still maintaining and feeling lucky. Mostly spin, walking and HIIT. I might throw in a few crossfit classes too depending on the WOD. At this point I really have to modify movements.

Maternity Clothes?
Yes and no. Mostly dresses, leggings, definitely maternity pants and a mix a tops. I’m loving these black pants from the Gap right now.

Mood:

A combo of happy, stressed and frustrated. As silly as it sounds, I cried last week over our maternity/holiday photos — we don’t get a disk/USB of the 30 edited digital images unless we buy them (each one individually…which is pricey). I’m trying to figure it out. With that said, I may or may not share any on the blog.

Also frustrated and stressed about where we’re having our baby. My cardiologist doesn’t recommend I deliver in Tahoe and is suggesting we go Reno, NV. That’s a bit over an hour drive! We’re having a January baby in snow country! My luck the night I go into labor it will be the biggest storm of the season. Yes, I just went worse case scenario on you. We’ll see how the next seven weeks go because I would much rather drive five minutes to the hospital than an hour plus.

Looking forward to:
Our 35 week ultrasound is in two weeks and we’ll find out how big she is and have a better idea of our due date.

Baby It’s Cold Outside // Baby M’s Tahoe Shower

“It’s really happening — we’re having a baby,” said the eighth month pregnant woman to her husband Friday night. I’m not kidding. I think it finally set in. Time to start moving and grooving on the nursery!

This week Baby M was celebrated by all the Tahoe ladies plus a dear college friend. With our peanut being born in the dead middle of winter you can only imagine what the theme was!

These ladies did an amazing job. The shower was hosted at my friend Rosie’s restaurant Blue Angel Cafe. Above the restaurant is the “Loft” which is perfect for events! Plus, their food is super healthy and yummy!

Yummy mini chocolate, almond and lemon cupcakes from Cakes by Grace. The best place in town for cupcakes. We actually had these mini cupcakes at our wedding too!

My long time friend and her little girl! They drove all the way from SF to celebrate with us.

Among various games like labor mad libs, present bingo and drain the bottle, guests were asked to channel their creative side and help create our babe’s first alphabet book!

Friends for 14+ years and counting. I can’t wait for our girls to be besties!

My friend Natasha is also expecting. Of course we had to get a “bump” shot.

With all the lovely ladies!

Living so far from family I feel extremely grateful to have such a large network of ladies I can call friends in Tahoe. I know they are as excited about Baby M’s arrival as we are. Our peanut received so many thoughtful gifts including a number of books to help build her library. Now I just need to get on organizing everything!
