If you’ve ever stood in front of the fridge at 5 p.m. wondering what to make for dinner, you’re not alone. Between work, school, and everything else, getting dinner on the table can feel like another full-time job. But with a few small habits, you can make easy dinner planning part of your routine—without the stress.

Here are five time-saving ways to plan dinners faster, stay organized, and actually enjoy your evenings again.

1. Start with Your Schedule

The first step in easy meal planning is knowing your week. If Tuesdays are packed with after-school activities or late work meetings, that’s a night for quick dinners—like tacos, sheet pan meals, or leftovers. Save your new recipes for slower days.

Pro tip: My $5 Weekly Meal Planning Template includes a space to note your schedule so you can match meals to your busy days with zero guesswork.

2. Shop Your Kitchen First

Before you write a grocery list, take a quick inventory of what you already have in the fridge, freezer, and pantry. You’ll save time, money, and reduce food waste by planning meals around ingredients you already own.

Try searching Pinterest for recipes using what’s left over—like “chicken + rice + broccoli” for easy weeknight inspiration.

3. Create a Go-To Meal List

You don’t need new dinner ideas every week. Keep a running list of your family’s favorite meals—think spaghetti night, stir-fry, or salmon bowls. Rotate these recipes so planning feels faster and more familiar.

Bonus: store that list right in your $5 Meal Planning Template for easy reference week after week.

4. Prep Smart, Not Hard

Meal prep doesn’t mean spending your whole Sunday in the kitchen. Focus on prepping the basics—like roasting veggies, cooking grains, or marinating protein. Having a few ingredients ready to go makes dinner come together in minutes.

Even 20 minutes of prep can make your weeknights run smoother.

5. Write It Down (and Keep It Visible)

Once you’ve planned your dinners, write them down somewhere you’ll actually see them—like the fridge, a whiteboard, or your meal planning template. This keeps you accountable and saves the mental load of daily decision-making.

The $5 Meal Planning Template has space for each meal, a grocery list, and notes—so everything is organized in one place.

Make Dinner Planning Easy

Dinner planning doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. By matching your meals to your schedule, using what you have, and keeping a simple system, you’ll spend less time stressing and more time enjoying dinner with your family.

Ready to make meal planning simple? Grab my $5 Weekly Meal Planning Template and plan your week in minutes—not hours.

If you’ve ever stood in front of the fridge at 5 p.m., wondering what to make for dinner, you’re not alone. Between work, workouts, kids’ schedules, and everything else life throws at us, figuring out meals can feel like a full-time job. That’s where meal planning comes in—and why I created my Weekly Meal Planning Template.

This template isn’t just a blank calendar. It’s a tool to help busy parents, runners, and anyone who wants to eat better without the stress of last-minute decisions. By setting aside just a little time on Sunday to plan your week, you’ll save time, reduce food waste, and feel more in control of what your family is eating.

Here’s how I use it

I start by picking three dinners I know everyone will enjoy. For example, my Quick & Easy Shrimp Curry or the Gluten-Free Chocolate Donuts make a perfect night-in meal and dessert treat. Then I add breakfasts and lunches that are easy to prep ahead of time—overnight oats, protein smoothies, or even a batch of Peaches & Cream Overnight Oats to fuel busy mornings. Snacks are next—think homemade granola bars, roasted chickpeas, or fresh fruit.

One of the best things about this template is that it lets you mix and match recipes from your own collection. I like to pull from favorites I’ve shared on the blog, such as my Chocolate Chip Date Milkshake, or even try something new from the America’s Test Kitchen app. Everything is laid out clearly, so I know exactly what I need to buy and prep, and I can see my week at a glance.

I also include a space for notes and prep tasks. This is where you can jot down when to marinate chicken, chop vegetables, or start a slow cooker. The small planning steps make weeknight dinners so much easier.

Using a meal planning template has been a game-changer for me. Not only do I feel less stressed, but my family is eating better, and I’m actually saving money because I’m not making random last-minute trips to the store.

Ready to Start meal planning?

If you’re ready to take the chaos out of mealtime, grab my Weekly Meal Planning Template today. It’s simple to use, flexible, and designed to help you plan balanced, family-friendly meals without the stress. Plus, you can link directly to your favorite recipes in the template to make planning even easier.

Take a few minutes this weekend to plan your week—you’ll thank yourself come dinnertime.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring into the fridge at 6 p.m. wondering what to make for dinner, you’re not alone. Meal planning can feel overwhelming, but with a simple template to guide you, it becomes a stress-free system that saves time, money, and energy. A weekly meal planning template is one of the easiest ways to streamline your grocery shopping, reduce food waste, and make sure your family eats balanced, delicious meals all week long.

Why Use a Meal Planning Template?

Meal planning isn’t just about being organized—it’s about creating more space in your life for what matters. When you sit down once a week with a structured template, you eliminate the daily guesswork around meals. Instead of scrambling to throw something together, you already know what’s on the menu. Plus, planning ahead makes it easier to incorporate healthier choices and use up ingredients you already have.

A template also helps you stick to a budget. By shopping with a clear list tied to your plan, you’re less likely to grab extras you don’t need or forget key items that require another store run.

What’s Inside a Weekly Meal Planning Template

A good template is flexible while still giving you structure. The one I use includes:

Days of the week with space to jot down breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

A grocery list section organized by category (produce, proteins, pantry staples, etc.) so you can shop faster.

Notes area for reminders like “soccer practice—make it quick” or “try new salmon recipe.”

This framework keeps your meals balanced while allowing room for variety and family favorites.

Tips for Making It Work

Start simple. Don’t try to plan every detail perfectly from day one. Choose two or three dinners your family already loves, then add in a new recipe for variety. Batch-cook proteins or prep vegetables ahead of time to make busy nights easier. And always keep a backup option—like soup and grilled cheese or a big salad—on hand for when life doesn’t go as planned.

Some Thoughts

Using a weekly meal planning template turns the chaos of “What’s for dinner?” into a system you can rely on. Whether your goal is to eat healthier, save money, or just simplify your week, this tool helps you get there. Once you experience the calm of opening your planner and seeing your meals mapped out, you’ll never go back to winging it.

Hi, Hey, Hello! Warning: Don’t read if you’re hungry

You’re here today because you’re either curious about what I eat, looking for a meal plan or how to set your week up for sucess. Either way, grab a cup of coffee (I sadly ran out this morning), pen, paper and start taking some notes. In our house, the hubby handles paying all the bills, budgeting, etc. While I on the other hand, handle more the of the day-to-day household chores i.e., meal planning, shopping, etc. BTW — Check out his annual budget spreadsheet HERE. Yes, he lays out an annual budget. I’ll save that for another post.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Hummus

Back to meal planning. Why do I meal plan? Well, for a few reasons which include: creating healthy nutritious meals, to limit dining out/ordering in, and to save money. One of my goals for 2018 is to cut our food budget in half — keeping it roughly between $400-$500 a month. It’s not because we’re hurting for money it’s simply because we have lofty financial goals. Besides, I think you would agree to spend $700- $1,000 a month, not including meals out, for 3 people is just ridiculous. Plus, I love challenging myself. Once I have a few months under my belt I’ll share my tips and tricks. Right now I’m in the trenches and only have $55 left for January or I’ll go over budget. Not a biggy, but I’m trying hard to stay under $500!

I’ve always loosely meal planned, but as of January first things got serious. As in I was actually paying attention to how much I was spending. And no we’re not doing the envelope system. While some people need that we don’t. We like the cash back on our card, plus we pay off our credit cards in FULL every month – yes every month! We have zero debt aside from our house and my car… that’s for another post. Back to meal planning…. how do you become a Meal Planning Machine/Boss? Simple, make a plan, write it down and stick to it

7 Simple Tips to Meal Plan/Prep Like a Boss

1. Once a week take an inventory of your fridge and pantry. I like to do this Saturday night because I typically shop on Sunday for the week.

2. Think about what you could make using what you already have. We keep our freezer stocked with meat and fish. Plan your meals around what you have first then dive into Pinterest or a cookbook for additional ideas.

3. Decide on 3-4 meals, but make sure they are big enough to provide leftovers for the days you aren’t cooking.

4. Yes, you need to eat leftovers. This will help cut spending and you don’t have to cook dinner every night.

5. Think about the staples you need to the week. i.e., coffee, milk, fresh fruit, snacks, etc.

6. Don’t forget about breakfast and lunch. Every Monday I cook the hubby a frittata for the week. It’s super easy and makes breakfast effortless. He doesn’t get bored because we constantly switch up the combinations, which are endless.

7. Prep what you can Sunday night. For example, we eat a ton of potatoes so I’ll chop them all Sunday so all I have to do is add spices and oil before roasting.

8. Think about using your slow cooker once a week. A few examples include pulled chicken/pork, soup, chili, bread, etc.

If you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack inspiration make sure to check out my IG stories. Because that’s where I share all the details about what I eat daily.
