Over the last few years, I’ve been working toward how to reduce plastic pollution. Specifically our family’s waste, plastic consumption, and switching to Eco-friendly and non-toxic products.

I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m always doing laundry and there are only 3 of us! Kind Laundry is the eco-friendly and non-toxic laundry I was looking for.

Everything from their poly mailers to the packaging and the actual product itself is either compostable, recyclable, and biodegradable.

Made with only 4 simple plant-derived and biodegradable ingredients (mostly Coconuts) their sheets contain no harsh chemicals, yet still, harness the strong cleaning power of traditional laundry detergents.

Kind Laundry is based in Canada and is an eco-conscious company championing a plastic-free life. They are on a mission to eliminate over 1 million single-use plastic laundry detergent jugs, one load at a time. ⁣

Our bedrooms are often the most overlooked spaces in the house. We spend so much time making the living room inviting, the kitchen efficient, and even the entryway stylish, but the bedroom? It usually gets the leftovers. But here’s the truth: your bedroom sets the tone for your mornings and helps you unwind at night. That’s why I’m finally focusing on how to create a cozy and functional bedroom that feels like a retreat instead of an afterthought.

So, after putting it off for way too long, I’m finally pulling together some master bedroom update plans. Think of it as the grown-up version of nesting, but with a little more style and a lot less baby gear.

Start with What’s Not Working

Take a look at your space. Is it cluttered? Does the furniture work for your lifestyle, or is it just what you’ve had for years? In our case, we had mismatched pieces, limited storage, and lighting that was more “meh” than mood-setting. None of it made the space feel restful.

Define Your Vision

When designing a bedroom that’s both cozy and functional, think about how you want to feel when you walk in. For me, it’s calm, intentional, and inviting. Here’s what I’m incorporating:

Neutral colors like soft whites, grays, and natural wood for a calming palette.

Functional storage that looks good and helps keep clutter at bay (hello, new dresser and bedside tables).

Layered lighting, mixing task lighting with softer, ambient lamps.

Textiles that invite you in—plush bedding, throws, and a grounding rug.

Personal touches like art and photos that make the room feel ours.

Cozy Doesn’t Mean Cluttered

One of the biggest misconceptions is that cozy equals crowded. Instead, think layered simplicity: choose a few quality textiles, a rug that defines the space, and decor pieces that bring warmth without overwhelming. Even one cozy throw blanket can make the whole room feel more inviting.

Keep It Functional

While cozy is key, function makes the space work day-to-day. That might mean adding a bench at the end of the bed for storage, choosing nightstands with drawers, or finding lighting that doubles as decor. The best cozy bedrooms are also practical—you’ll love them more if they make life easier.

Why It Matters

Creating a cozy and functional bedroom is about more than just decor. It’s about carving out a space that restores you at the end of the day and energizes you in the morning. For busy parents, runners, or anyone balancing the chaos of everyday life, a restful bedroom isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

What’s Next

I’ll be sharing updates as this project comes together, from thrifted finds to budget-friendly upgrades that make a big impact. If you’re working on your own bedroom, start small—one cozy throw, a new lamp, or a clutter-free corner can completely change the feel of your space.

Hey, hey! Day two of sitting down and hammering out a blog post for you all! Whoop whoop! Today it’s all about rugs because it has been the great debate in our household for the last few years. As in I’ve bought and returned various rugs and then there’s the fact my husband and I can’t agree on a style. He’s waived the white flag. So at this point, I’m just looking for something I like and that is also kid, dog, and husband friendly.

I recently updated our kitchen runner (because the old one never really worked) and I absolutely LOVE it. It’s made of recycled plastic and you would never know it. The hubby said order it in an 8×10 for the living room, but I don’t think we need to be matchy, matchy.

My next goal is to order a rug for under the couch. Here’s the question do I order an 8×10 or 9×12? Do I go with a neutral or jazz it up with color? There are so many decisions and ordering online makes it even harder.

BTW, we’ve had our mid-priced Macy’s Couch for over a year and we’re still extremely happy with our purchase. It’s perfect for this chapter of our lives – looks decent, is in the right price range, comfy and kid, dog and hubby friendly. Do you see a theme here?

I could totally spruce it up with a few pillows and change up the art on the wall for some contrast, but I’m not too worried about it. maybe in a few years haha because honestly, it’s not a priority if I’m being brutally honest here.

10 Rugs I’m Currently Digging

1. Boho Kilim Nagar Indoor Outdoor Rug
2. Taupe Double Diamond Woven Kilim Astrid Indoor Outdoor Rug
3. Pietro Terrazzo Grey Geometric Rug
4. Thea Hand Hooked Wool Rug
5. Mixed Stripes Cotton Dhurrie – Multi
6. Meadow Rug
7. Valley Ridge Rug
8. Mid-Century Geo Wool Kilim
9. Multi Facet Rug
10. Kenya Fleece Area Washable Rug

Decisions, decisions.

Which rug would you pick? Once I pick a rug I can replace our 1970 oak coffee table!

When you buy a <strike>fixer-upper</strike> house the to-do list never ends. My husband and I bought our house in 2010, yes at the bottom of the market. We bought a fixer-upper because it was the “smart financial choice.” Plus, it’s what we could afford even though we were approved for more than we could afford.
There are often times we wish we had purchased something bigger, but then again eight years ago we were looking for a starter home. Over the last eight years, we’ve turned this house into a home. Maybe even our forever home. Only time will tell. Anyway, back to home improvements.
This is currently the kitchen.

And on the other side, it looks like is this…..

Before we even moved in we replaced the carpet, painted walls and gutted the bathroom on the cheap. Since then we were able to save up and remodel the kitchen. We’ve also completed a number of smaller projects like painting the house, replacing windows and doors and minor landscaping the front yard. Needless to say, there’s still a ton to do or redo (cough the main bath).

So what better way than to make a list so we can start checking things off.

Kitchen
– swap out barstools
– update kitchen runner
– update curtains, dining table & chairs
– swap out 2 random sliders to big windows
– fix door and paint

Main Bathroom (While I would really like to redo the entire bathroom that likely won’t happen for a hot minute.)
– refinish vanity
– finish painting

Powder Bathroom
– update paint
– update mirror
– swap out light fixer
– replace flooring
– install baseboards

Mudroom
– paint doors, walls, trim and ceiling
– swap out water heater to tankless
– replace flooring
– install trim
– build a bench, shoe storage, etc.
– build in washer/dryer and additional storage above

Master Bedroom (aside from fresh paint & carpet this hasn’t been touched since we moved in)
– New bed frame, nightstands, dresser
– paint everything
– update carpet (when we moved in we installed super cheap carpet I would like to update the carpet in all three bedrooms)
– swap hollow doors to solid doors
– swap out slider to french doors
– art

Guest room/Home office
– paint everything
– update carpet
– swap hollow doors to solid doors
– art

Emerson’s room
– paint
– update carpet
– swap out dresser
– add family & friend photos

Living Room
– buy an area rug
– swap out coffee table
– paint fireplace
– swap out mantel
– add built-in the left of the fireplace
– find an occasional chair
– hang some art/photos
– refinish lawyer bookcase
– swap out slider to french doors
– add curtains?

Front Yard
– update porch, walkway, and driveway

Backyard
– come up with a plan and execute it! Eight years later and it’s still a blank slate.

Garage
– drywall
– organize everything

So I guess I better get to work! Tips, deals or suggestions are always welcomed.

So let’s break it down a little further. Instant Pot seemed to be the IT kitchen gadget of 2017. Did you by one? Guess what I didn’t either, but I still want one and this cookbook to go with it. I also can’t make up my mind about an Airfryer. Do you have one? Are they worth it?

#TargetStyle! Come on, everything is so cute right now. I purchased the Free People knockoffs when they first came out and LOVE them. I wear them all the time and receive so many compliments. Universal Threads also has a number of basic tops to help transition to spring. Oh and the dresses! This one is in my cart!

You can’t leave target without browsing all things home decor. After 8 years we still don’t have patio furniture etc. Well, things are changing this summer! I think some outdoor lights would be a nice touch.

I’m still on the hunt for the perfect area rug and while the above rug might not work in my house I think someone should totally pick it up.

Anyway, I didn’t even scratch the surface. Until next time…

What did you recently purchase and Target that’s amazing?

In 2015, only four months after Emerson was born, we decided to take on our biggest renovation to date! The kitchen and living room! It was a full remodel consisting of removing a 24ft wall, moving doors, extending walls, and everything else that goes with a kitchen remodel. It ended up taking longer than expected with back orders, etc. but in the end we couldn’t be happier!

Let’s just dive right in!

BEFORE

Here’s what the kitchen looked like when we purchased the house in 2010! The house had a ton of potential.

Here’s a few before snapshots. After moving in we painted the cabinets, walls, updated the hardware and added a ceiling fan. Sorry about the mess. We realized we needed to snap a few before photos after we started clearing everything out. Plus, baby fog…

We had two pretty decent spaces to work with, but they were both dark and ugly. The massive wall we decided to take down! Best decision ever.

The other side of the wall.

Progress!

AFTER

Removing the wall really lighten up the space. We moved the door from the mudroom to kitchen to allow for the refrigerator and pantry. While I love the idea of an all white kitchen we added warmth with light gray lower cabinets and a marble subway tile backsplash. Extending the backsplash to the ceiling gives the kitchen a nice visual and add texture. Not wanting any transitions in the flooring we used Hickory hardwood floors throughout the kitchen, living room, entry and hallway. Oh, the barn door! While it’s currently unfinished I’m in love.

Since it was a load-bearing wall we had to include a post. Not ideal, but the wall is still gone.

The island is 7×4 feet and includes drawers/storage cabinets and a seating area. I love all the drawers!

The cabinet boxes are ikea and the doors are semi-handmade. The doors came unfinished at the time so we had them painted. Since installing our cabinets you can now purchase pre-painted doors from semi-handmade. Pro Tip: Have your cabinet maker/installer frame out the boxes instead of using the Ikea legs. While it might cost a tad more money upfront, in the long run they will be sturdier.

The countertops are a Carrera quartz and have very light veins. The lower cabinets are SW Rare Gray and uppers are white

We bought our house in 2010 and tackled the kitchen in 2015! Looking back at the before I don’t know how I lived so long with the dated kitchen!

Saturday was a big day for Emerson. We converted her crib to a toddler bed! We keep calling it a “big girl bed” and she absolutely loves it. Our Nap time and bedtime routines are 10-15 minutes longer, but so far she’s transitioning well. Our goal is to transition her to a twin bed by the end of summer.

With that comes planning a full on big girl room. I would love to find a vintage bed frame to refurbish or paint. For bedding I plan to find a solid color comfort to layer with one of her many quilts. Ideally the walls will stay gray and we’ll stick with pink and teal accents. Things we’ll keep include a gray glider, blanket ladder and shelves. I’m on the fence about the mid century modern dresser. I might swap it out for something a tad smaller so she has more room to play.

Until things really get underway I’ll leave you with this sleeping beauty.

Let me count the ways I love Target. I know I’m not alone when I say I’ll go into Target for one thing, but I leave with 10. There’s just something about cruising around Target looking at everything. I totally have a system, too. However, living in Tahoe I spend more time browsing online than in the store. Since it’s free shipping to the store or with a order minimum of $25 I have no problem ordering online.

Well last night I totally went down the Target rabbit hole looking at patio furniture. Which is totally something we need. We current have nothing but beach chairs to sit on in the backyard. So you could say we’re in the market.

Anyway, I found so MANY other things that I tried to convince myself I needed. Hello a cactus doormat! That rug would add a nice element to our kitchen. Target sandals are always a must. How cute would that side table be in a guest room?! You see how this happen right? So that’s how we ended up here… me sharing a few fun finds. Happy shopping.

Pro Tip: order online for home delivery or in-store pick-up and receive 1% cash back with EBATES. Every penny adds up!

What are you currently loving from Target?

Last week, my Instagram stories featured an unexpected masterpiece—my child’s latest artwork sprawled across our new kitchen cabinets, walls, built-ins, and even the cedar chest. If you missed it, imagine coming home from the gym to find pen marks everywhere. Let’s just say, I almost cried.

Immediately I grabbed a wet cloth and started scrubbing. When it didn’t work I tried a multi-surface cleaner before turning to the internet. It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube, etc. Anyway, the first remedy that popped up was hairspray. Random.

Initially, I thought no way, but I tested a spot on the wall just in case it ruined the paint. I could always paint the walls, but the kitchen cabinets are another story. Verdict: It took the pen and paint right off. Needless to say, don’t use hairspray.

Next up was baking soda and water. You’re probably laughing, but guess what it worked and didn’t ruin the the paint or finish! Plus, it’s all natural. It also took off black rubber marks from the bar area!

So how did I use baking soda and water to remove the pen from the kitchen cabinets?

dry cloth

small glass or bowl

spoon

How To Remove Pen Marks:

Mix the Paste: Add about 1/3 cup of baking soda to a small glass or bowl. Slowly add water, mixing as you go, until you create a thick, toothpaste-like consistency. If it’s too runny, simply add more baking soda.

Apply and Scrub: Scoop a spoonful of the paste onto your sponge. Begin scrubbing the affected area, using firm pressure. It might take a few minutes, so don’t be afraid to put some elbow grease into it.

Clean the Surface: Once the pen marks start to fade, use a damp cloth to wipe away the paste, followed by a dry cloth to finish. Repeat the process as needed until the surface is spotless.

This simple, natural method will have your cabinets, walls, or furniture looking like new!

Removing pen marks from cabinets, walls, and furniture doesn’t have to be stressful. With just a few simple ingredients like baking soda and water, you can tackle even the most stubborn stains without damaging your surfaces. This all-natural solution is not only effective but also budget-friendly and safe for your home. Next time a little artist strikes, you’ll be ready to restore your space in no time!

With a new living room and kitchen space our old furtuine along with some finshing are starting to look old, tired and dated. Because we’re a sticklers for budgets we didn’t run out immediately and buy all new things. Instead we’ve been talking about it for at least a year. If you ask my sister it’s probably been longer, but either way we’re getting closer to pulling the trigger on a new couch!

But it doesn’t end there! Nope. With a new couch I’ll finally be able to update our area rug, throw pillows, ottoman and curtains! Yup, I want to pick a couch first and coordinate decor, etc. around it. It is the largest and most expensive piece.

My style is all over the place, but one thing I do know is I crave clean lines and rustic charm. Either way here’s what I’m dreaming up today.

Pillow / Pillow / Couch / Ottoman

Clock / Rug / Curtains / Chair / Side Tables

I’ll share all the details about our couch once it in the house, but know I’ve been searching high and low for the ideal couch at the right price.

What are we looking for? Enough seating for family and friends without the couch looking like it dominates the room. Definitely a gray sectional. Regarding material I just want something that is super easy to clean (hello toddler and dog). I’m not willing to sacrifice quality, but don’t want to pay $5,000. I’ve looked at Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Macy’s, Bassett and Interior Define.

Until then, fest your eyes on some living room inpso!
