A few summers ago I acquired a cedar chest  hand crafted by m<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">y grandmother&#8217;s brother at age 18. After living at my mom&#8217;s for many years she was ready to pass it along. While in her care she decided to paint it. At one time I&#8217;m sure the antiqued painted look was popular\/in style, but it&#8217;s not our cup of tea. So after a year or so of talking about refinishing it I finally decided to tackle the project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Let&#8217;s get this party started with a before shot of the beloved chest.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/chest-1024x682.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/chest-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><b>Materials Needed:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">2-4 Foam Applicators\/paint brushes&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Gloves<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/Jasco-1-Qt-Premium-Paint-and-Epoxy-Remover-QJBP00202\/202247418#specifications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paint &amp; Epoxy remover<\/a> and a can to pour it in &#8212; I used a clean soup can<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Plastic paint scrapper <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Sand Paper 80, 120 &amp; 220 grit <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/B0007XXHGO\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0007XXHGO&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=icecreandfref-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orbit Sander <\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=icecreandfref-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0007XXHGO\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" width=\"1\" \/><\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Tact Cloth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Tough Oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">2-3 old rags <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1694-1024x682.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1694-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Not all Materials are pictured above<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Do not skip on the gloves the remover will burn your skin. You may even want to wear a face mask and protective eyewear.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1701-682x1024.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1701-682x1024.jpg\" width=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Once I had my gloves on I poured the remover into a metal container and applied with a paint brush to a small area. The stripper was working.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1708-1024x682.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1708-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">After 15 minutes I tested a small area with the scraper to see if the paint was ready<br \/>\nfor removal. Once it was ready I removed the loosened finish by gently scraping with the wood grain. I used a toothbrush and toothpick to help remove old finish buried in the edges and grooves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1710-1024x682.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1710-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We had to repeat step one and two a number of times. Once the majority of paint was removed we busted out the orbit sander and went to town.&nbsp; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1712-1024x682.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1712-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">After a few hours of sanding she was ready for a nice coat of tough oil. Of course I though about painting or staining the chest again, but look at how clean and fresh it is now! <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1718-1024x682.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/ahappyhealthyhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_1718-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Lastly I wiped down the chest with a tack cloth to remove excess dust.
